MAYABUNDER – ANDAMAN & NICOBAR TRAVEL GUIDE

INTRODUCTION

Mayabunder is situated in the Northern part of Middle Andaman at a distance of 242 km by road and 130 kms by sea from Port Blair. Here, you may find people from Burma and East Pakistan settlements. For people trying to explore more about Andaman Islands and looking forward to avoid crowd during peak season this is a popular destination. You might not be able to find the best resorts as in Havelock or Port Blair, however, the virgin beaches and the mangrove rides would be a fantastic experience.

How to Reach :

1.By Air :

The only commercial airport to reach Andamans is located at Port Blair, Veer Savarkar Airport, named after the famous freedom fighter Vir Savarkar who was imprisoned in this island at Cellular Jail earlier known as Kaala Paani. Direct flight to Port Blair is available from Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi. The journey usually takes around 2 Hrs 30 Mins.

2.By Sea :

The Andaman group of Islands is well connected by sea. Regular passenger services are available to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.

Chennai – Port Blair – Takes around 60 Hrs.

Kolkata – Port Blair – Takes around 66 Hrs.

Visakhapatnam – Port Blair – Takes around 56 Hrs.

Best Time to Visit :

Andaman and Nicobar Island is a year-round tourist destination. The area receives minimum fluctuations in the temperature and is always pleasant. The best time to visit Andaman and Nicobar Island is considered from November to mid-May. Monsoons are however recommended to be avoided because of the high tidal waves, incessant rains and strong winds.

Places to Visit :

Karmatang Beach

a wonderful beach located at a distance of 12 km/7.5 m from Mayabunder. This beach, with crystal clear water and rich coral reserve is a turtle nesting ground and also has mangrove line creeks for nature lovers. If one is visiting during the December – February season, this very interesting scene could be witnessed live.

Various Creeks and Austin Creek

offer a good experience of cruising through the evergreen mangrove fringed creek, with exotic flora and fauna. These are ideal for nature lovers, bird watchers, research / education oriented tourists.

Avis Island

is a small beautiful island also known as Coconut Island. This island 15 minutes by boat ride and has a mini beach with crystal clear water and is an ideal picnic spot.

Ray Hill

at a distance of 20 minutes boat ride from Mayabunder jetty, houses an Eco Village developed and maintained by ANIFPDCL. The facilities available include eco guesthouses, wilderness trail, and elephant safari, rock climbing for children, angling, and small library. An Ideal place for family tourists.

Austin X island

at a distance of 25 minutes boat ride from Mayabunder jetty, has a palm fringed little beach and a shallow sea with mangrove belt. This is an ideal spot for picnic and trekking. Spotted deer coming to water holes is also a common sight.

Forest Museum

located in DFO office (close to Mayabunder jetty), houses a rare collection of coral life and fauna. It also has an Information Centre to inform visitors of the collections in the museum. Ideal for research / education oriented tourists.
