INTRODUCTION

 

 

Udupi is an important Vaishnavite coastal town in Karnataka. Udupi is the site of the famed Krishna temple and the Ashta Mathas. Udupi is also renowned for its delectable cuisine and Udupi restaurants present all over India.

Udupi is located 381 km from Bangalore and 50 km from Mangalore. This temple town in Udupi District is situated on the southwest coast of India.

History

Udupi is the birth place of Sri Madhvacharya, who set up the Astha Mathas, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the state. It is popularly believed that the name of Udupi originated from its Tulu name Odipu. According to other sources, the name Udupi is a result of merging the Sanskrit words Udu (stars) and Pa (Lord).

1.By Road :

Udupi is well-connected by a network of roads, with the National Highway 17 passing through Udupi. Private and government buses are available round the clock at Udupi.

2.By Train :

The Udupi railway station lies on the Konkan railway route.

3.By Air :

The nearest airport is the Mangalore (Bajpe) Airport.

Malpe:

This is an important fishing and trading harbor, located 6 km from Udupi. You can also visit the captivating St. Mary’s Island here, about 6-8 km away, covered by hexagonal asphalt rocks.

Milagres Church:

This ancient church, positioned 7 km from Udupi, stands witness to the assault of a marauding Tipu Sultan.
